Serving Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake New York
Services
Primarily the Tri Lakes Center for Independence offers Information and Referral, Advocacy, and Peer Counseling services to persons with disabilities or those involved with disability related issues. Through our affiliations we have access to a wealth of information that individuals can use to restore the control lost by, or taken from them in the management of their lives.
Other services are provided as needs arise and resources permit. Currently amongst the services that we provide are:
- Information and Referral
- Advocacy
- Peer Counseling
- Transportation for people with physical disabilities that would prevent them from riding in a non-accessible vehicle
- Computer Training
- Training and Seminars
- Independent Living Skills Training Classes
- Building Access and Modifications Technical Assistance
Who is eligible for TLCIL services?
Any person with a disability or anyone who thinks of themselves as a person with a disability or anyone dealing with a disability related issue is eligible for TLCI services. Eligibility is simple. Anyone requesting services will be asked a few questions for our records. We do have to justify our funding with grant providers in order to stay in business and they want to see that we are doing some good in the community. If we don't serve anyone directly then it will be assumed by the grant providers that there is no need for us and our funding will be terminated.
All services are provided free of charge as resources permit. From time to time there will be special events at which participants may be asked for contributions in order to cover expenses.
Computer loan program
In the Fall of 2003 the Tri Lakes Center for Independence initiated a computer loan program. Computers are donated to the center by a local computer shop and individuals. Because adaptive programs are very large, only computer with the ability to be upgraded to Windows XP are accepted. We clean them up and if necessary restore them to good working order. Disabled individuals in our service area are eligible to apply for a computer loan. The loan period could be anywhere from just a few days to several years. There are no costs incurred by the recipients.
Recently we received a loan from the Gibney Family Foundation, the purpose of which is to make computers available specifically to blind or visually impaired children who have a need for a computer at home and can't afford to purchase one.
If you know of someone who could benefit from this program then please feel free to contact us at info@tlcil.org or call 1-866-891-5295.
